The Pack Book 2. The lost Hunter
Chapter 1
Rock woke up on a beautiful, crisp, sunny day with the scent of the pack in the air. Rock sighed happily. Another day would start in the wonderful pack. He trotted out into the clearing to see that all of the leaves on the trees had changed color, and looked so beautiful. He also saw Stem, the wolf he had rescued earlier in the summer. Now, Stem was almost ready to join Flower, his sister, in the Young Hunter’s cave. Stem was looking at a small, green, ball like thing attached to a small root. Rock walked up to it and asked Stem, “Do you know what is this Stem?”
“No, but it’s smooth, and sort of lumpy at the same time.” Stem replied. “I’m not sure either.” Rock said.
At that moment, Shadow called out for a meeting. “Hello everyone! Have a good night’s rest?” Most of the wolves nodded, but some of them didn’t. “I have an announcement to make.” He said. “The young hunter’s each will now have a helper, sort of like a mentor to help them get through training. The helpers will be hunters which will do most of their duties, with their young hunter. So, Flower, will you please come up here. Hmm. Maybe, Oak. Will you also come up here.” When both wolves came up, Shadow said, “Oak, are you ready to take and train a young hunter?”
“I-I think so.” He replied.
“Then may you teach Flower well, with the help of your Pack mates. You are a very skilled hunter. Teach her all you know.”
“I will” Oak said quietly.
Oak and Flower walked down the big rock together. Then Shadow kept going. “Also, Stem is ready to become, a young hunter!” The whole pack cheered. “Stem, please come up here. Also...Boulder. You come up here too. The wolves both walked up together. “Stem,” Shadow started. “Are you ready to take on the duties of a young hunter?”
“Yes I am!” Stem said bouncing up and down. “Boulder, are you ready to help Stem through his young hunter life?”
“Y-yes. I can do it.” Boulder said.
“Then, Boulder and Stem, congratulations. You too Oak, and Flower.”
After the meeting, the sun-rise hunting group went out. Only, Oak, Boulder, Flower, and Stem went out. Rock thought that he should say hello to Leaf. So, he went to look around the caves. She was no where to be found. “Shadow, where’s Leaf?”
“She’s not here?”
“Correct.”
“Sure?”
“Yes.”
Then Shadow checked all of the caves for himself. “You’re right!”
“We’d better find her!” Rock shouted.
Chapter 2
“Calm down!” Shadow told Rock. “She’s probably just hunting!”
“But don’t you need to tell the leader before you go out to hunt?” Rock asked.
“Y-yes...”
“Well then, where is she?!”
“Fine, Rock have it your way. I will send out some wolves.”
“Thank you Shadow!”
“Rock, Boulder, Meteor, and Oak! Go out to try to find Leaf!”
Everything sprang into action. Rock, Boulder, Meteor, and Oak, all went dashing off in different directions.
Rock’s heart was pounding as he ran through the woods. What would he do with out Leaf!
When the sun was at it’s highest point, there was still no sign of Leaf. How am I going to find her? Rock thought. She could be anywhere!
The sun was setting and Rock decided to go back to the caves to get a good nights rest. He would go out and try to find her again early the next morning. That night, he was shaking so much that he couldn’t fall asleep. He loved Leaf, but wondered if he would ever see her again. He finally went to sleep, but it wasn’t a peaceful sleep at all.
Chapter 3
When he woke up, he thought, Ah. I should go see Leaf - oh...right...
He got up, and went looking for Leaf. He came to a grassy field and thought, I think i’ve been here before... He was right. At this very field, if you looked out into the distance, was the big ugly colored block that he had rescued Stem from, so many weeks ago.
He went up closer to the ugly block. Sure enough, He could see Leaf inside. She was scratching at the clear part of the block, just as Stem had done. But Rock couldn’t go in this time. There was one of those scary, hairless, tall, things, guarding the door. He thought that he would have to let Leaf know he was going to get her, and then tell Shadow. He couldn’t do it alone this time. Not with the, scary hairless thing guarding the door.
Rock waited until the scary creature’s eyes closed just for a small time so that he could sneak around the house, find another clear part, and let Leaf know that he was going to get Shadow, to help her get out. It would all be very risky, and very scary.
Chapter 4
Rock ran fast though the woods back to the cave. “I know were Leaf is!” Rock called. “I’m coming!” Shadow called back. They both ran back to the big ugly block. “So, were is she?” Shadow asked. “She is in that block.”
“In the human house!?”
“...so that’s what they are called.”
“How are we going to do this Rock?”
“You’re the faster runner, so you will be the bait.”
“BAIT!”
“Yes...bait.”
Rock started telling Shadow what his plan was. When he was finished, Shadow walked slowly up to the house, pretending not to know that the humans were there. A human came out of a door, holding something behind his back. Shadow still, pretended not to know.
Then, out of nowhere, Rock came bursting out of the woods and towards the clear part of the block. He planned to just smash it like he did to rescue Stem. But then everything went wrong. When he went up to the clear part, Leaf wasn’t there! He banged at the clear part and could not smash it. Then, he heard an earsplitting boom. Then a yowl of pain. He ran back over to Shadow to see what happened. It turned out that the human was holding a hunting gun, and that he had just shot Shadow. Shadow was laying on the ground yipping faintly, in pain. “Rock, save yourself...ugh...I want you to go back to the cave. I am sorry I have to leave you.”
“No! Don’t leave me yet! Come on...just get up...you can do it...you can make it to the medicine cave...right?”
“No, Rock...I can’t. Tell Pebble I love her, and will miss her. Take good care of the pack son...” Then, slowly his eyes shut, and Rock dashed away, before the hunter could get him too.
Rock returned to the pack and decided that, he should yowl to get everyone back to the cave. He yowled as loud and long as he could, and then in a few seconds, all of the wolves came dashing as fast as their legs could go. “Wolves of the pack,” Rock called when he climbed to the top of the giant rock. “Shadow...has...died...from a hunter.” There were gasps of shock. “I told him to come with me to try to get Leaf...and he died from a hunter. It’s my fault he died. Also, Meteor, is the new leader of this pack. Meteor needs to pick a helper. Come on up meteor.” Rock was stepping down to the ground when meteor was at the top. “I will chose...Rock. Because his father was a good commander. I think you will be too.”
Chapter 5
Rock was blushing at the thought, of being leader someday. “Thank you Meteor!” Rock called. “Yeah Rock!” Pebble called out from the crowd. “Now,” Meteor started. “We have lost a leader, so we need to have the night in silence. We will not sleep. We will stay outside. Now, we need to send out a sun-set group. Oak, Boulder, Lea-...Leaf isn’t here...uh...Flower? Can Flower go Petal?”
“Of course she can! You’re leader now. You can have her go even if I don’t want her too.” Petal said.
“Oh, right. Thank you Petal. Sun-set group, you may head out.”
Later that evening, Rock was sitting in his divot in the cave. He thought about Shadow. He heard Meteor calling, “Time to come outside everyone!” The wolves all sat in silence. Rock saw some wolves that he had never seen before.
The next day, when the silence had ended, Rock went over to meet the other wolves. Rock saw the wolf that helped Petal give birth to Stem, and her name was Berry. “Nice to meet you Rock,” She was saying. “The only time i’ve seen you was when I was helping Petal give birth to Stem.”
“Nice to meet you too Berry!”
Rock had noticed that now, since he was at the pack, they had lost two wolves. Well, he still thought that he needed to find Leaf. So, he said to himself, “Yeah...I gotta find Leaf. What will I do without her if I can’t find her.”
Chapter 6
Leaf was panting as she hoped that someone would find her. She was in a hot, dark scary place where that sound of barking all around her. This place was the animal shelter. She had no idea why on earth she was in here. Of course, she had no idea where she was. “Anyone here,” Leaf called. “That could help me?” The barking stopped. “We are all trapped in an animal shelter,” A voice called.
“Oh...is that a good thing, or a bad thing...and i’m not even a dog!”
“Yes, yes I know your not a dog.”
“Well then, how do you know...you can’t even see me!”
“That’s what you think. Look to you right.”
“Oh, wait...wait - oh! I see you!”
“And I see you.”
“May I ask - what is your name?”
“My name is, Wind.”
“Cool! My name is Leaf.”
“I’ve been in here for days. Do you think, we can try to get out of here together?”
“Maybe...but first, how’d I get here?”
“I don’t know. But tell me, in your own words, what was it like?”
Leaf told him the story of how she got lost, and how she ended up in the house, and of course, how Rock had told her that he would save her, but was too late. Because, she was taken away in an ugly block that had wheels on it.
“Oh that was a human car.” Wind said.
“...so that’s what they are called.”
“Anyway, can you hep me try to get us outta here?”
“Yes.”
“Great!”
Chapter 7
Leaf and Wind were planning on their escape.
“Do you know how to open the latch on the cage?” Leaf asked wind.
“No...but I know someone who does! Hey, Blue!
A groggy low faint voice came from somewhere in the room.
“Y-yes?”
“Can you open the latches on our cages?”
“I could...if I was over there...”
“Well...um...”
“I have an idea!” Leaf joined the conversation.
“Since these are cages, and not crates, we can put our paws through the bottom!”
“Oh great idea Leaf!” Wind said happily.
Blue, started walking over to Leaf and Wind.
“G-great i-idea Leaf!” Blue said.
The wolf and two dogs worked together to help Blue unlock the latches. When they finally opened the latches, Blue, Leaf, and Wind, snuck out of the hot stuffy room, and entered, another room that had a human sitting in a chair, sleeping. They carefully snuck past him too, and tried to get out of the door. However, the automatic doors, didn’t work for the group. So, instead, Blue, Leaf, and Wind had to push on the doors to finally get them open. When they got outside, it was nighttime.
Lucky for them, there were no human cars passing. They dashed across the road.
Meanwhile, Rock had come back to the cave and was very depressed. Still no sign of Leaf he thought to himself. He howled in distress.
Leaf heard this howl, and knew who it was right away. She started following it.
“Guys!” Leaf said.
“I hear Rock!”
“Who is Rock?” Wind asked.
“Oh...someone from my Pack.”
Leaf howled back.
When Rock heard this, he jumped up into the air, and started calling Leaf right away. He ran and followed the noise. Soon, he picked up her scent. She was getting closer! Then, faintly in the dark, he saw her. She saw him. They both bounded up to each other. Face to face. “Rock!” Leaf called. “Leaf!” Rock called back. “Is it really you?” they both said at the same time. Then they both said, “Yes.” Then, they laughed at each other and at themselves. They looked at each other in the eyes. Leaf’s eyes twinkled. They got closer and closer to each other, slowly. Then, their muzzles almost touched. Then, after a little while, they both closed their eyes, and touched.
Chapter 8
A year later, on a warm sunny morning, the whole pack, was gathered around, to see something. That something, was a new baby pup. Who’s baby pup, you ask, well, it was Leaf’s and Rock’s baby of course. A cute little pup. Barking, very faintly. “What should we name him?” Leaf asked very faintly, (because of the just giving birth, you’d think that she was tired. And she was.) “Well...I did think, maybe...Spruce.”
“Well, yes that would be nice...”
“Do you like Spruce, Leaf?”
“Yes...”
Then Meteor called, “Welcome to the Pack Spruce!”
Spruce giggled and wiggled all over happily.
“Leaf?” Rock asked.
“Yes, Rock?”
“I never thought that from my old life, of always being lonely, and hunting by myself, would ever turn upside down, and come here to this wonderful place. And have a wonderful mate, and a wonderful pup. Just as I always wanted...”
